Toxin Free Home with Naturepedic

I received free product from Naturepedic in exchange for this honest review. I was not paid for the opinions or reviews expressed in this blog post.

One of the things I've become passionate about since becoming a mama, is removing toxins from our home, and making sure we have as safe an environment with as little chemicals as possible to call our home. I shudder at the thought that I use to religiously buy those scented air fresheners that plugged in. I'd buy soooo many of them and I made sure to have one is every single room of the house, little did newly-wed me know what kind of garbage I was bringing into our home. So. Many. Awful. Toxins.

Not long after Bella was born I started doing a little research, finding out that even though some of these items may smell good, they were seriously bad for our health, and especially the health of our precious little babe.

The thing that was even more surprising to me as I started researching even more, is that it wasn't just the scented things and air fresheners that are full of toxins. Shampoos, body washes and conditioners, dish soaps, flooring, furniture (we found this out last year after a couple furniture purchases made us sick for weeks), candles, bedding, plastics, and mattresses among so many other countless items.

Wait, what? Mattresses? Unfortunately I'm not joking. Most mattresses are filled with toxins and chemicals that off-gas constantly, so while you (or your little one) is sleeping and trying to rest from the busy day, you're actually absorbing chemicals through the skin and breathing in toxic off-gassing from everything inside the mattress. Considering how much time we spend in our beds each night, the statistics say that the average person spends around one third of their lives sleeping, and how much of our time is spent just relaxing in bed, that's something we should definitely be concerned about.

Due to all of the health issues that seem to be on the rise such as environmental and food allergies, asthma, autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, eczema as well as other cognitive disorders, infertility and very early puberty in girls, thyroid problems, cancers and more, health officials and even the general public are starting to take notice and stand up against all of the chemicals that are filling our every day lives. Which we should do, especially considering that some of these chemicals are known links to some health problems such as the ones I mentioned above, and others, well, we really don't know what some of them cause yet, but do we really want to find out? I've taken a stand in our home against these things, weeding out the bad things from our cleaning supplies. Sadly even some companies that claim to be "natural" are not, so that is why I've started making our own household cleaners (I'll be sharing some recipes here on the blog soon for some of my non-toxic homemade cleaners), reading labels to see what things contain and researching nearly every purchase as if I'm an FBI agent.

Until recently, I had no idea that most mattresses (and even a lot of furniture) are full of formaldehyde, synthetic polyurethane, phthalates,  flame retardants... all the things that you want to avoid as much as possible. So after muuuuuch searching, we finally came across Naturepedic mattresses, and their brand felt like such a breath of fresh air.

We immediately loved their products and brand transparency, the fact that instead of all of the bad things filling heir mattresses, they choose to fill their mattresses with non-GMO, 100% certified organic, United States grown cotton. Such a healthier option. Naturepedic mattresses also contain organic wool, organic latex, steel inner spring, organic cotton encased coils for support and comfort. What I love about Naturepedic is that they will not use anything in their products that is a known or even suspected carcinogen, endoctrine disruptor, or that is not aligned with safe, healthy, and toxin free sleep. Which means no flame retardants (did you know that organic cotton is much less flammable than most "flame retardants"?, plus it's completely safe), no polyurethane foam, no soybean or bio-based foams, no harmful glues or adhesives, no synthetic latex, and no GMO cotton or GMO fibers of any kind?

Using a mattress that is free of toxins is especially important for children, as their fragile and young bodies and minds are rapidly developing, and they, even more than we adults spend more time in bed. Babies and toddlers average between 10 and 12 hours a day in sleeping and playing on their mattresses, so with it being such a prominent item in the home, as soon as we found out everything about what most mattresses contain, we knew it was of the upmost importance that we make the switch to a safe, and organic mattress for Bella's room with Naturepedic.

We chose the 2 in 1 Organic Cotton Ultra/Quilted Mattress (in regular twin size). It was the perfect fit for our home, not only for the safe qualities, but also since one side is quilted, and he other side is waterproof (perfect for kids at this young age). The waterproof side also serves as a dustmite barrier which is another reason we love and chose it, since Bella has tested positive for dust mite allergies in the past. Everything about this non-toxic bed is absolute perfection. From the feel and size of it to the soft comfortable-ness (that's a word, right?) of it. Bella has never slept better than she does now that she's sleeping on this mattress, and she isn't constantly congested every night anymore either.

Bella's new Naturepedic mattress is so soft (yet super supportive) and comfortable, and it's the perfect addition to her room and to our home. As well as safety and no toxins, Naturepedic also prides themselves in the quality of their products, that's why each Naturepedic product is handcrafted with the finest materials by highly skilled Amish craftsmen and are also backed by a lifetime limited warranty.

Naturepedic offers mattresses for the entire family as well!
