All About Bug & Bean Kids

Earlier this year we were introduced to Bug and Bean Kids through the wonderful world of Instagram. I was just immediately drawn to the beautiful designs in Jessamin's shop and after chatting with her in a phone conversation for about half an hour I just grew to love this sweet mama and her heart for offering quality made and timelessly classic children's wear.

Her dresses are such sweet ones, I'd even consider them heirloom quality, and you know how we're quite dress obsessed around here, as soon as I took it out of the package, Bella gasped and exclaimed "mama it's so pretty!" and instantly proclaimed it was her new most favorite dress. I'm positively sure that she would have worn it for a week straight if I had let her. She didn't want to take it off and I kept catching her sneaking into the laundry hamper to get it out to wear again (I had to explain that it did indeed have to be washed after playing outside all day lol), but can you blame her? just look at those stripes and ruffles! It totally reminds me of a Victorian era dress (which equals allllll the heart eyes) which I absolutely adore and I love the touch of wooden buttons on this sweet dress.

I'm super excited to have interviewed Jessamin from Bug & Bean Kids so you can learn a little more about her shop! Read it all below!

HI JESSAMIN, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR SHOP, BUG & BEAN KIDS?
Hi April, so excited to be interviewed for your blog. Thank you for the opportunity! Bug & Bean Kids is a little girl’s dress shop that aspires to influence young girls to know that they are naturally beautiful and that they have infinite potential. Our dresses are inspired by nature to help connect the idea that all of God’s creations are beautiful.

WHAT WAS/IS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR BRAND?
Bug and Bean are the nicknames of my two little girls. My oldest is Marlee Bug and my youngest is Avery Bean. They inspire me every day to be my best self and like all moms I want the best for them. I want them to know that they are special and that they can be anything they truly desire to be. My oldest says that she wants to be a mom which always melts my heart. So my girls are definitively my inspiration. Also when I was a little girl, I grew up in the middle of nowhere in the mountains. We were always outside playing. So being in nature is my happy place. I really wanted to incorporate the beauty of nature in my looks because it is so inspiring to me.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN AND START MAKING CHILDREN’S CLOTHING?
I have been sewing since I was a little girl myself and would hand sew little things for my barbies. My mother is a seamstress as well as my grandmother and they taught me from a young age. They would also make clothes for me all the time. I remember one particular package my grandmother sent full of handmade clothes just for me. I really felt special and loved anytime I wore something handmade. As I grew up I knew how to sew but didn’t do it much until I had Marlee and naturally wanted to make her all the pretty dresses I could. I did this for several years until I decided that I would like to share my talent with others. So I think sewing children’s clothes was something that was part of me all along but the passion for it wasn't given life until the birth of my daughter.

WERE YOU SELF TAUGHT?

I knew basics from my mother and grandmother but I have learned so much in my adult years. In a lot of ways I am self taught. If I want to work with a new material or try a new technique then I just have to dive in and learn from experience. That is one thing I love about sewing is there is always something new to try.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT AS A SHOP OWNER?

I think my proudest moments are seeing my dresses on my customer’s little girls. I can tell that they feel different, that they feel beautiful. This always gives me insight into the good in what I’m doing. These little girls are our rising generation and I know that they will journey further and achieve more than we ever will. I feel a sense of pride in taking part of molding our rising generation’s sense of self worth.

WHICH PRODUCT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE (SO FAR) TO MAKE?
I think it's the details of the dresses that I love. I loved the little V-back dress with the lace trim that I made in Rifle Paper co's rose fabric. I will be incorporating more lace for our fall line because I think it is so dreamy and beautiful. I have also loved the ruffles from our last collection and will be exploring with more of that. I am about to release some darling dresses for a mini summer collection that will have ruffles, pompoms, and scalloped hems that I can’t wait to reveal! Look for those dresses in the coming weeks!

Make sure to head on over to Bug & Bean Kids website and Instagram to check out all of their sweet designs and products, and make sure to snag a piece from their new summer collection launching soon!

  1. Well this is certainly a cute dress, one which I would’ve loved to wear as a kid. And your kid is so adorable. I will check out bug and bean kids if I ever want to shop for kid’s clothes.
